From Nishinomiya, Japan, Rie (Emily)
Emi is working for the Library as part of a one-year professional
exchange internship program.
Having provided reference, circulation, and interlibrary loan services for a branch library at Osaka University, Rie has a strong interest in how the academic library system here works. Additionally, she wants to learn more about Canada in general. "When I was a child, I had a dream to live abroad — now I have the opportunity to do so," stated Rie.
"The library system Rie is familiar with is very different from the system
used by academic libraries in North America." commented Shabiran Rahman,
Department Head of the Dana Porter Library's Information Services and Resources
department. "During her time here, Rie will be
able to put all of her previous and new skills into practice by working for a
number of departments in the Library, such as Circulation Services and
Acquisitions. For example, she is currently working with e-journal subscriptions
for the Acquisitions department."
Rie's exchange with the Library is part of the International Internship Programs' Professional and Cultural Exchange Program (PCEP). Established in 1979, International Internship Programs is a private, self-funded organization located in Tokyo, Japan.
